Where SHIELD fits in your fleet

SHIELD sits on top of the systems you already run. It brings their data together and gets it to the people who can act on it: your drivers, the office and your insurer.

Built to help with:
  • time back
  • fewer incidents
  • lower claim costs
  • a stronger hand at renewal
  • drivers looked after

The driver, in the SHIELD app

Drivers get a check-in while a change in their driving is still small. They can rate every plain-English message and hear a well done when they improve. The app also gives them a simple way to report an incident at the roadside.

The fleet manager and the office

See which drivers need attention this week and why, with each driver's history available in one place. Filter by depot to focus on the people who need support.

Your insurer, broker or repair network

Your insurer, broker or repair network has each incident within minutes, with photos, third-party details and a licence check attached. At renewal, you can show them the process behind your figures.

Claims come back each month and are linked to the driver and what came before.

Know which drivers need your attention this week, and why

SHIELD picks out the drivers who need you and tells you the reason, looking across every system at once. It looks for trends, because six harsh-braking events in a week tells a different story from two in a month.

Tracking, cameras, tacho, licence checks and your insurer's claims data sit in one view behind one login, filtered by depot, with a SHIELD Score for every driver. The source systems are still there when you want the detail. The core feeds are kept up to date automatically and claims data arrives each month.

Where vans or trucks are shared, SHIELD works out who was driving from the tachograph, the tracking or the walkaround check, depending on what you run. A careful day driver isn't marked down for what happens on the night shift.

Nathalie Gager, Group Fleet Manager at Orkin, says SHIELD means "the bulk of the data is there for me to see".

SHIELD saves Orkin's fleet team 15 hours of admin a week, most of it time that used to go on reconciling expenses and sorting out rental vehicles.

Since Orkin started using SHIELD, its claims have fallen from about 6 a month to 3.3.

The right drivers hear from you in time

Most systems stop at the data, so the driver manager still has to contact each driver by hand. SHIELD's Driver Influence takes the first part of that job off you.

When a driver's pattern starts to change, they get a check-in in plain English on the SHIELD app, welfare first. Drivers who improve hear a well done. Your own time goes on the drivers who need a person, with their history in front of you.

Requests you'd otherwise send by email go out as tasks in the driver app, with a record of each one. SHIELD also checks every driver against your insurer's policy criteria, using licence checks from the DVLA, so you can see if anyone falls outside them.

"It needs to feel like we've got their back, not like we're policing them."

Nathalie Gager, Group Fleet Manager, Orkin

How Driver Influence works

From the roadside to your insurer in minutes

Much of a claim's cost is decided in the first few days, while the third party can still be reached and before a hire car has been running for a week. SHIELD gets the incident to your insurer while that window is still open.

Fleets using SHIELD have seen average claims costs 22 per cent lower. Here's one incident from the demo system:

  1. 10.55, at the roadside. Your driver reports it in the SHIELD app, with photos, third-party details, the location and a signature.
  2. 11.00, in the office. You get an alert, check the report and add notes, with a licence check from the last 30 days attached.
  3. 11.10, with your insurer. The complete report goes to your insurer, broker or repair network.

If something's missing, the office can ring the driver while the incident is still fresh.

Published figures show the size of the gap:

  • The same minor collision cost £3,169 in an ideal scenario and £13,800 when details were missing and reporting was delayed (Aviva Risk Solutions, September 2025).
  • A claim reported the same day with immediate third-party contact cost £2,850, against £8,350 after 15 days and £15,686 after 15 days with no accident form (PIB Insurance Brokers, in Motor Transport).

Since Orkin started using SHIELD, the time from an incident to the insurer having everything it needs to start on the claim has dropped from around 11 days to 2.5, more than four times faster. Over the same time its average claim has fallen from roughly £3,600 to £2,100, about 42 per cent lower.

Start and end-of-rental checks in the app tie any hire damage to the right rental period and the right driver.

A stronger hand at renewal, with the evidence to back it

When your insurer's claims data arrives each month, SHIELD links every claim to the incident, the vehicle and the driver, with the driver's score in the weeks before it. The score before the claim helps tell a third-party or one-off event apart from one that followed weeks of worsening driving, so a good driver isn't judged on a crash that wasn't theirs.

Loss ratio, claim frequency and cost per claim are tracked through the year, with claims broken down by depot. You can also show your insurer the check-ins sent and how each driver rated them.

Those figures and ratings point to a process running week in, week out, rather than a good or bad year that could be down to luck. That's the evidence you take to your insurer at renewal. A difficult claims year doesn't have to tell the whole story if you can show what's changed and what's now in place.

Since Orkin started using SHIELD, its loss ratio has gone from 84 per cent to 56 per cent, which gives it a stronger position heading into renewal.

Questions fleets ask

How up to date is the data?

Tracking, camera and tacho data is kept up to date automatically. Claims data comes from your insurer each month.

Our broker already handles claims. Does SHIELD replace them?

No. SHIELD works with whoever insures you. It gets incidents to your broker, insurer or repair network faster and with better evidence, then gives you the record to take into renewal.

How much does it cost?

From £10 a vehicle a month. At that price, one avoided claim pays for a year of SHIELD for about 17 vehicles. That sum uses Orkin's average claim since it started using SHIELD, which is £2,100. The demo covers what set-up involves for your systems.
